"SEO services" is a vague description of the kind of work that might be done… It really depends on what you want done, how big the job is, how experienced the SEO is, how bad the site being optimized is, what niche your site is in, and a host of other factors.
If you have a 10 page site and only care about having <title> and meta elements set, it could be done in an hour. If your site is in a competitive nichee and you want it to rank well, you’ll likely require a LOT of link building which is very time consuming if you are looking for quality links which is what you’ll need in a competitive niche.
There really is no way to answer your questions without a LOT more information. But as the previous poster stated, SEO is an ongoing thing… You don’t just do it for a couple of months, get your site to rank, and then leave it alone. You should never stop generating new content, building new links, etc.

I agree with Tom, good SEO is an ongoing process for long term results. You can do 1 campaign that can take you weeks or months even but once that one is done you need to start another. Search engines like consistent and continual growth

SEO is an ongoing project, the way that the search engines rank and grade changes everyday. Now, to initally set up your site and make it SEO friendly so that search engines can "read" your site well and make sure you are keyword enriched…this usually takes about a month. But that’s just the beginning, if you stop tweaking your website, link building, etc. then it was all for nothing.
