Shall I use the Home Learning College to gain the skills I need to become a website designer?

Im think of becoming a website designer as I am an artist and creative. I also enjoy using computers so I feel this would be very good for me. I found the website Home Learning College who offer distance learning courses in this field and was thinking of doing what of there courses.

Has anyone used this company before and are they good? What was your experience?

Hi Jonathan,

I did this course 4 years ago because I wanted to build my own web site. The help and support I received from my tutor was so encouraging that I passed every one of my course assignments with a distinction and also my final exam. I had no previous experience in this field and I found that the way the course was structured that I could study whilst looking after my new born baby. After completing the course I went on to set up my own Web Design company which means I’m a stay at home Mother and can enjoy all the benefits which working from home offers. I couldn’t think of a better way to learn about this subject than by doing so though the Home Learning College and really wish they also did a programming course.

Do look at the the Open University offerings. They do not do graphic design but their webby and programming courses are first rate. Cheaper and genuine.

For graphic design, take some Adobe courses. Start with the free ones they offer on the web and go from there.

If you need a website that gets your business results, is easy for you to update
yourself and that looks beautiful and suits your business perfectly, talk to
someone that specializes in that and does it properly.

It leaves me with the impression that the designer for one is a bit of a jerk. Also that they’re inflexible and at the same time full of them self. It also leads me to believe they don’t do the other aspects of design not because they want to "specialize" but rather because they can’t. It seems like a longer way of saying:

If you need a site and want to over pay for someone who’s too lazy to take on the whole project I’m your man.

A bachelor’s or an associate degree in graphic design is usually required for a job as a graphic designer. Creativity, communication, and problem solving skills and familiarity with computer graphics and design software also are important.

Education and training. A bachelor’s degree is required for most entry-level and advanced graphic design positions; although some entry-level technical positions may only require an associate degree. Bachelor’s degree programs in fine arts or graphic design are offered at many colleges, universities, and private design schools. Most curriculums include studio art, principles of design, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques, and Web site design. In addition to design courses, a liberal arts education that includes courses in art history, writing, psychology, sociology, foreign languages and cultural studies, marketing, and business are useful in helping designers work effectively.

Designers show employers these traits by putting together a portfolio—a collection of examples of a person’s best work. A good portfolio often is the deciding factor in getting a job.

Because consumer tastes can change quickly, designers also need to be well read, open to new ideas and influences, and quick to react to changing trends. The ability to work independently and under pressure are equally important traits. People in this field need self-discipline to start projects on their own, to budget their time, and to meet deadlines and production schedules. Good business sense and sales ability also are important, especially for those who freelance or run their own firms.

Advancement. Beginning graphic designers usually receive on-the-job training and normally need 1 to 3 years of training before they can advance to higher positions. Experienced graphic designers in large firms may advance to chief designer, art or creative director, or other supervisory positions. Some designers leave the occupation to become teachers in design schools or in colleges and universities. Many faculty members continue to consult privately or operate small design studios to complement their classroom activities. Some experienced designers open their own firms or choose to specialize in one area of graphic design.

I found many people will go to sites like "Dynamic Drive" and give a few freebies just to get your name out and around.

The few flash sites I did see were nice, and I think you will go far in this business, wish I had better information to give you, but all I can say is keep posting your links everywhere you can.

Stay completely away from Ebay because they will charge you for selling your bag.

Go with craiglist or try to see what a second hand store will buy your handbag.

In various webmaster forums you can create thread about your service. Some are free like forums.digitalpoint.com, but there are forums they charge very low to advertise products or service.

Offer some initial works in discounted price or free for review . Get some good review , if good you may get good works from those forums.
